We calculated the residual current after the construction of the sea dike in order to investigate the change of the tide and tidal current after the construction of the sea dike. Moreover, we calculated the tide and tidal current after the construction of submerged breakwater in order to preserve the environmental condition of creature habitat. We compared the tide and tidal current before and after the construction of submerged breakwater, to investigate the possibility of MITIGATION in the fisheries.INTRODUCTIONThe reclamation area of Saemangeum(Kunsan) located at the western coast of the Korean peninsula. There are many small island including extensive areas of semi-diurnally flooded and dewatered tidal flats. The reclamation area of Saemangeum have a range of 5.6m spring tide and maximum current speed is about 2.3m/sec in coast area. Most of the sediments deposited on the tidal flats were transported from the Mankyung RiverDongjin River during flood in summer, and consist of silt sand in the depth of 10m to 30m. The winds are strong north westerly winds in winter. In the past twenty, reclamation projects for agricultural and industrial have generated most coastal constructions in the west coast. The construction of the 33km sea dike and 40,lOOha reclamation area is building in the Saemangeum area. Such large-scale coastal works of sea dike construction will certainly change marine environments and ecosystems. Those are common coastal construction practices that directly or potentially damaging to marine aquaculture and ecosystems. The purpose of MITIGATION is to harmonize the development and the conservation of environment, to restrict environmental destruction and to reproduce the environment damaged by the construction in the coastal region.
