Pesca Pubblicazione scientifica Real-time acoustic fishing selectivity for sustainable practices FILONE TECNOLOGICO TEMA economia circolare e sostenibilità produzione e cattura RIASSUNTO SEAPIX is a new Dual Steerable multibeam echosounder (DS-MBES) with an original architecture using a steerable symmetric Mills Cross. This configuration allows to image water column and sea bottom in both athwart ship and fore-and-aft direction with steering capability, covering 120° × 120° under ship and describing whole ecosystem. This system ensures real-time habitat description including seabed (bathymetry and seabed hardness) and biomass assessment with species classification. SeapiX is deployed onboard 50 modern factory trawlers in North Europe for pelagic/demersal fish classification, and has demonstrated its capability to enhances fishing selectivity in real-time by assisting skippers in discards regulation compliance. SeapiX has been introduced in Alasakan fisheries onboard a Trident vessel by 2016 for fish species evaluation and discrimination. We illustrate first sea results on typical cases and crew behavioral changes by developing new “Fishing strategies”. Operational benefits for fishery operations and ecosystem management purposes are described, as well as future developments to contribute in Alaskan fishery management”.
