A tool string deployment system (TDS) has been developed over the past two years and now has a proven record. The case study presented involves running 140m of 3 3/8"" guns along a horizontal well. The guns were conveyed on 2"" coiled tubing with a cable installed.These large assemblies require careful engineering and programming to enable coiled tubing to deploy them iri highly deviated wells. The paper discusses techniques that have been employed to reduce the drag of the BHA and coil. A clearer understanding of modeling and job planning is evolving and the paper addresses the pitfalls of working coiled tubing to the material limits.SummaryThe Tool Deployment System is a means of deploying a bottom hole assembly into a live well where the total length of the assembly exceeds the total length of the surface lubricator. BHA connectors have been developed to facilitate connection and disconnection within the surface lubricator by means of a specially modified coiled tubing BOP. The operation involves the utilisation of a standard coiled tubing unit in conjunction with a specialised deployment BOP control panel. Gate valves offer double barrier element isolation.The IDS system was used for the first time with a single connector at the end of 1994 in Holland. In July 1995, a 140m BHA incorporating 13 connectors was deployed into a well in Norway and by the end of October 1995, a further two IDS operations had been completed, also in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The first of the Norwegian operations was particularly challenging insofar as the geometry of the completion when combined with the directional profile of the well pushed the very limits of the coiled tubing operating envelope. Computer simulations were invaluable in assessing the narrow tolerances of running coil into this well. To assist reaching the target depth, rollers and torque and drag reducers were necessary. The programme, which included logging and the installation of a plug was completed in eleven days with all objectives met.
