The invention relates to a cable (1) provided with marks (2), which are fixed at predefined intervals along the cable. The measurement device comprises an electronic detection means (6), which is suitable for automatically detecting, on the moving cable (1), every local change in the transverse geometry linked to the presence of a mark (2). More specifically, the device can also comprise a wheel (3) suitable for being rotated by the cable (1), an encoder (4) suitable for detecting the number of turns made by the wheel (3), and an electronic acquisition and processing means for calculating a corrected cable length according to the number of wheel turns detected by the encoder (4) and the detection signal provided by the electronic mark detection means (6).
