Abstract
Evaluating high-pressure high-temperature (HP/HT) wells has become increasingly challenging. As the wellbore temperatures exceed the continuous operating specification of available sensors and electronic components, standard deployment and data acquisition methods are no longer sufficient. Nearly all practical methods of protecting the sensors and electronics from temperature are time constrained. Therefore it is necessary to explore all options to acquire a maximum amount of data in a finite amount of time downhole. This paper will discuss the equipment and processes necessary to provide critical formation evaluation in the formidable HP/HT environment.
Introduction
A combination of a greater demand for hydrocarbons, more lucrative prices and limited newreserves in the traditional basic locations has sent operators searching for hydrocarbons in increasingly challenging environments. As the search for hydrocarbons presents greater challenges, a growing number of ventures into deep hostile reservoirs have created a demand for services capable of meeting the requirements presented by ultrahigh-pressure, high-temperature fields. For the purpose of this discussion, HP/HT is defined as exceeding the industry standard specification for wireline logging tools of 350°F and 20 kpsi. HP/HT environments require more than just having tools rated to HP/HT standards. Conceptual planning and design tools must evolve concurrently with downhole instrumentation. Once that instrumentation is available, specific operational planning procedures and logistics guidelines are needed before the job ever starts.

The level of current and anticipated HP/HT drilling activity is the key indicator when considering whether to invest in developing hostile instrumentation.
