Abstract
A distributed processing system was designed to monitor and control special drilling operations. It is fed by five regional centers located across Brazil; all information is also available at the head offices in Rio de Janeiro, where data are grouped. This user-friendly system deals with technical, cost, equipment, and personnel data pertaining to fishing, personnel data pertaining to fishing, core sampling, drill-stem testing, and cementing assembly operations. It can generate consolidated reports containing statistical data as well as operation reports. The system monitors equipment service life and performs preventive maintenance task. Introduction
The special services division (DISESP) of the Petrobras drilling department (DEPER) overseas special activity operations, that is: fishing, core sampling, drill-stem testing, installation of subsea wellheads, operations with cementing assemblies, temporary well abandonment, casing patches, tie-backs, and underreaming. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, The DISESP is responsible for the technical coordination of the actual operations and which are located in Manaus, Natal, Aracaju, Sao Sebastiao do Passe, and Macae.
Since these operations take place at locations spread widely across Brazil and, furthermore, since they entail the frequent exchange of equipment and information, the drilling department decided to develop a nationwide system for monitoring and controlling special operations as well as the tools involved, creating a uniform, standardized data base.
IMPLEMENTING THE SYSTEM
The system was designed in modules so that it could be implemented more rapidly and in steps. In 1987, the first modules were introduced at the company's main offices and at regional centers simultaneously.
No new hardware purchases were necessary since the new system could be implemented as a resident routine in the department's existent network of minicomputers. The five regional centers and the main offices have at their disposal one nationally manufactured Cobra540 each, with 1 MB of main memory and 10 KB partitions.
