This paper presents implementation of a novel algorithm called Fish Electrolocation Optimization (FEO) on optimal DG and capacitor placement to enhance reliability economically in a radial distribution system. Total cost comprising of power interruption cost, real power loss cost, capacitor installation cost and DG running cost has been minimized. Distribution system reliability indices like SAIFI, SAIDI, ASUI, ASAI, AENS and newly developed reliability index CBRI have been found improved from the initial values. Two comparative studies have been performed amongst real coded Genetic Algorithm (rcGA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Modified Cultural Algorithm (MCA) and the proposed Fish Electrolocation Optimization (FEO). The first study has been done to observe the improvement of reliability indices. The second study has been executed to observe the total cost reduction. Standard thirty four bus radial distribution system with disconnects and lateral protection has been considered for case study purpose. It has been observed from the simulation study that FEO has outperformed all chosen meta-heuristic techniques for reliability improvement as well as total cost reduction.
