Sustainability Assessment of Marine Aquaculture Based on A Simple Index in Kyushu, Japan

RIASSUNTO

The nutrient load generated by excessive coastal aquaculture farms leads to self-pollution, and lead to a decline in aquaculture production. In order to assess the sustainability of coastal aquaculture and estimate the optimal aquaculture intensity in the future, a simplified Aquaculture Intensity Index (AII), combined with a fish production model is proposed. Case study of several bays in Kyushu of Japan found that distance from fish farm to bay mouth is an important factor affecting the sustainability of aquaculture in Kyushu through the comparison of AII performance and red tide occurrence.
