RIASSUNTO
Artificial intelligence is opening up many new and exciting ways to improve environmental management. AI is certainly not a panacea. The applications of intelligent automation and machine learning tend to reflect the same technocentric and anthropocentric biases of ecosystem management more generally. Artificial intelligence has little capacity to challenge the underlying political and economic forces causing unsustainable exploitation of the earth. And there are definitely limits—and real dangers—of relying on algorithms to protect ecosystems. Yet as this chapter shows, artificial intelligence can offer crucial insights into the scale and intensity of global environmental change, as well as provide helpful tools to manage, conserve, and restore nature.
