Combining Industry and Fishermen Interests: Mar Atento Project, Challenges, Results and Future Steps

RIASSUNTO

The combination of local communities and industrial risk scenarios is always a big challenge. Nevertheless, in 2017 two oil & gas companies gathered to develop Mar Atento, a pilot project with focus in the engagement and training of fishermen to act in an eventual oil spill response at sea, aiming the safety and protection of marine and coastal environments, and also, register vessel of opportunities (vessels not related to O&G activities which could provide support in case of an oil spill). The objective was achieved, with fishermen and vessels trained and able to act in oil spill response. As a result of the Mar Atento Project, the companies became more prepared to respond to an incident once they have registered vessels and fishermen that can act and optimize the response in their area of influence. The objective of this paper is to share challenges, positive results and next steps of this innovative Brazilian Project.
